Breathing Fire

Jon Kinsman, YFFL Commissioner

November 21, 2023

It's been a long road back for the Snapdragons, but a 65-53 victory in Week 11 delivered their first division crown since 2016 when the trio of Aaron Rodgers, Frank Gore and Matt Forte combined to go 29-9 during a three year stretch that brought home three division titles and a Super Bowl in 2015.

Up until this season, wins have been hard to come by for the Dragons but a strong nucleus was slowly building via the draft. 2019 saw the drafting of WR A.J. Brown, followed by RB D'Andre Swift in 2020, QB Trevor Lawrence and WR Ja'Marr Chase in 2021, and RB Kenneth Walker in 2022.

The Dragons hit the ground running in 2023, opening up with seven consecutive victories to start the season. However, back-to-back losses, including a pitiful 18-point performance against the Beans in Week 9, had many questioning whether the Dragons were ready to be contenders, especially with Lawrence struggling to post points (single digits in 6 of his first 9 games this season).

Those doubts have been eased this past week as Lawrence delivered his best game of the season (4 TDs and 24 points), recent acquisition WR Calvin Ridley scored twice and the Dragons racked up their highest point total of the season. They now set their sights on the NFC bye with just three games left to play and the first of what owner Jon Kinsman hopes to be many playoff runs for this next generation of Dragons.

Elsewhere around the league, the Buddies also wrapped up a division title thanks to a 52-47 victory in a potential Super Bowl preview against the Brothers (that now gives the Buddies 5 AFC West titles in the last 6 years), the Orangutangs kept a slim 1-game lead for the AFC Wild Card over the Thugs with a 43-36 win, and the Refugees outlasted the Boys to inch closer to their first AFC East since 2017 as QB Josh Allen continues to amaze and is now just 8 points shy of his fourth straight 200+ point season.
