The Stage is Set

Jon Kinsman, YFFL Commissioner

December 12, 2023

It took until the final moments of the last game of the regular season, but the playoff field is now set for the road to Super Bowl XXXI.

The Orangutangs managed to hold onto a 10-point lead heading into Monday Night Football to down the Refugees and secure the AFC Wild Card despite a late season charge from the Merry Men, who won 6 of their final 7 games but ultimately couldn't overcome a 1-6 start to the season.

The Tangs will square off against the Refugees in a return engagement for the chance to play the Buddies in the AFC Championship. The Buddies wrapped up the first round bye with a 63-30 win over the Eaters but raised a few eyebrows with the start of QB Tua Tagovailoa over franchise star QB Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes had started every game of the season despite a down year (for him) while Tua has posted career numbers - will there be a changing of the guard for the AFC Championship Game? We'll see in two weeks.

Over in the NFC, the Dragons wrapped up the first round bye with an easy 40-7 victory over the Mallards. The Wild Card Chickens will face the NFC West champion Brothers in the first round as the Brothers will attempt to rebound from losses in 3 of their last 4 games including a stunning defeat at the hands of the 1-win Huskers to close out the season. While the Brothers have averaged 56 points over that span, luck has not been on their side - they may need it to vanquish a Chickens team that has not suffered a loss since Week 6.

Will Super Bowl XXXI see a back-to-back championship for owner Brian Davidson, a return to form for owner Jon Kinsman, another title for QB Josh Allen (the league's most consistent star) or the continued dominace of Mike Kinsman's / Nick Wood's Buddies and Chickens? We'll find out in just three weeks as the 2023 playoffs kick off on Thursday!
